Lesson Structure
When we work with families, to get consistent we need some structure to get results for families and to make sure that the Wonder Dog Training team is uniform.
The process and structure for training is simple. So simple that we broke it down into four easy parts. Each part has its steps that need to be done to get consistent results for families.
This is how trainers are graded.
The four major parts of the lesson structure are:
Arrive + Connect + Deliver WOW
Review + Plan
Train The Dog
Wrap Up
1) Arrive + Connect + Deliver WOW
Upon arrival, you have ONE mission. To get your people to LIKE and TRUST you. Upon arrival that’s your only goal. When you are arriving, waving and smiling is a must as soon as people open the door. When you are in the door, USE THEIR NAME + their families names. Compliment the dog again. Be their friend as soon as you walk in.
*Before each lesson, if the dog is a jumper, make sure they have the training equipment on the dog upon your arrival*
The exact steps below are:
- Smile + Wave (as soon as you see them or they open the door)
- “Hey _______, How is it going?!” (Use their NAME)
-Compliment the dog! (That is their baby!)
-Move them to a seat for Part 2
2) Review + Plan
Why do people hire us? To fix their issues! The review process is how we can make sure we are fixing their issues week-to-week. This step is CRUCIAL to success in training.
The steps are below:
-Before we do anything, in front of the client, pull up their Square notes and go over with them the issues that they had originally in the evaluation. Go over what we have worked on so far, see what still needs to be worked on more, etc. Get a baseline so we know where to go and what to do.
- “Last week we worked on ______ (issues worked on and obedience worked on), how did that go?”
-Go over what we are working on this week
-Give them a glimpse into the future “Next week, if all goes well, we will be working on ____”
- “Great, let’s see your homework from last week so that we can see where we are at? How did your homework challenge go this week, were you able to accomplish it?”
-Have them show you their homework
3) Train The Dog
This is the meat and potatoes of the whole thing. This is where the majority of the lesson is spent. During this time, we will work on bad behaviors (THE MAIN REASON THEY CALLED US) and work on good behaviors (OBEDIENCE).
During this section part of the lesson, not only do you need to train the dog, but you need to EXPLAIN how to do it, why it is important and then how they can use it in real life.
The steps are below:
-Fix any issues first and foremost. Do an exercise to get rid of bad behavior.
-Do the planned lesson assignment for that day — Train the dog until the dog is not having ANY issues with the assignment for the day, then pass the dog off to the owner.
-Have the owner do it (Trouble shoot if necessary)
-Break for the dog
-Have the owner train the dog again
4) Wrap Up
End the lesson in the right way and set them up for success.
The steps are below:
-Do their checklist for that particular lesson (there are different checklists for first lesson, normal lesson and last graduation lesson!)
-Give them their homework + challenge for the week + assign a video to watch in the client portal
-Remind them that it is their job to practice their homework that is assigned + participate in their challenge
-End the lesson with “Do you have any questions about this lesson or the collar?” “Is this something you can practice this week?” “If you need anything, please feel free to reach out. If you have trouble, do not wait until next time to tell me. If you have trouble, seriously, please let me know.”
