The Human Training Process — From Dog Lover to Dog Pro

Part of being the Lead Trainer is training new hires and taking them from Dog Lovers to Dog Pro’s. While you’re not doing the hiring all the way through, you are one of the decision factors when it comes down to who actually makes it on the team. So, hopefully by the time they actually get to you, you like them and are bought in with them being on your team.

Now that they’re on the team, it’s time to train ‘em up. We have the whole thing mapped out and planned day by day so you don’t have to do any guess work. All you have to do is take the print out and mark the stuff off day by day as you go through.

What Training Looks Like (Outline):

1) They join the team and onboard

2) Training for 6-7 weeks

  • The overall structure for the 6-7 weeks

    • The first week is “I do, you watch”

    • The second week is “I do, you help”

    • The third week is “I do, you help”

    • The forth week is “You do, I help”

    • The forth week is “You do, I help”

    • The sixth week is “You do, I watch”

  • Make notes of what we need to add to the training as you go through it so we can add it to the process for the people coming after your trainee

3) You cut ‘em loose and keep ‘em close their first few weeks to make sure it’s going well

What to Watch Out For During This Process:

  • Them not doing HW or self-study

    • Part of the process of getting them training in 6-7 week is them studying at home when they are off work. This is crucial to get them graduated in time. Bad team members don’t do the home study, make up excuses why they couldn’t, etc.

      • Note: They may have a valid reason for missing from time to time, but overall they need to be doing the work.

  • Being late

    • Self explanatory, if they will be late to a new job that will change their lives, they will be late when they are seeing our clients alone.

      • Note: Some days, they may be late and have a valid reason. We are looking for bad trends that aren’t good over time.

  • Things that go against the values or cultural tendencies

    • Early on, if they do things that aren’t in line with the culture here, they probably won’t make great long term fits.

  • Not being coachable

    • They are set in their ways, not willing to change, etc. Even after you talk to them, tell them what to do, etc.

      • Examples: Being too soft and coddling with the dogs, letting the dogs jump up, etc.
