Fun Training & Other Things
Fetch
In order for this to work the dog has to have some interest in toys and playing with them. The main complaint is normally the dog will go get the toy but won’t bring it back. The best way to fix this is to play fast paced fetch on a long leash.
Hype the dog up a lot by using a high pitch voice and showing the dog the toy! Remember dogs are made to chase and hunt things so get it excited.
Throw the toy (not farther than the long leash to protect your shoulders) and let the dog run after it. When the dog gets the toy praise the dog big time and let him know he did a great job!
Call the dog over and over in a fun high voice “come come come come come! Good boy! Come” and back up in a quick but playful manner.
Once the dog is to you, get the toy and as soon as you have it, throw it again.
The reward for bringing the toy is you throwing it again and playing more.
Pro tip: End the exercise with the dog still excited about playing and wanting more!
Roll Over
Get the dog in a down position.
Take a treat from it’s nose, around the shoulder and wait for their hip to fall over to one side.
Continue taking the treat up and around the head until the dog is on its back and finishes the motion and is back in the down position.
* Note: If the dog isn’t doing it, reward with landmark treats. This means that you’ll be releasing a couple treats as you go to get the dog to understand where you want them to move. Once they’ve got it down, switch to only rewarding once they finish the roll over.
Canine Good Citizen Test
The CGC (Canine Good Citizen Test) is done by AKC and a handful of our clients want their dog to be prepped for this. If you have a client want to do this, there is a list of things they need to be tested for and prepped for.
Here is a link to the tests and standards. Click Here.
Note: When we sign people up for this we tell them we can help but can’t guarantee their dog will pass.
